Gum and Periodontal Disease

Periodontal Disease is the technical term for Gum disease. It is caused by plaque, and is an infection of the tissues that support your teeth. Many of our patients at are unaware that they even have gum disease because it is relatively painless, and often thought of as a small discomfort. Plaque is a sticky film that is constantly forming on our teeth, it is a mixture of food particles and saliva, and it forms a bacterial haven that inflames your gums and causes the gum to pull away from your teeth.

Early Stage of Gum Disease: Gingivitis

With Gingivitis, you may notice that your gums are red, swollen and bleed easily. At this early stage, the disease is reversible and may be eliminated with a professional cleaning from one of our hygienists in our San Diego office, followed by daily brushing and flossing.

Advanced Stages of Gum Disease: Periodontitis

Periodontitis is a more severe form of Gum Disease and can lead to the loss of tissue and bone that support the teeth. If this problem is chronic, you may begin to feel your teeth become loose and start moving around in your mouth.

Aggressive Periodontitis is highly destructive. You could have this and be otherwise healthy. Aggressive Periodontitis is visible due to the rapid loss of tissue and bone that may occur in some, or sometimes all, areas of the mouth.
