Dental Crowns
|
 Dental Crowns, sometimes referred to as caps, is a customized tooth shaped cap that encases the entire natural tooth surface. This cap restores a tooth that has been damaged from decay or fracture to its original shape and size. This cap also provides strength to the original tooth structure, in hopes of protecting it from further damage and allowing you, the patient, to continue normal use.
Depending on where the tooth that needs the cap is located in your mouth, our doctors at San Diego Dental Studio may recommend one of the three common forms of crown.

All Porcelain: This type of crown is ideal for a front tooth that is easily seen. It is tooth colored so it hides discreetly with your natural teeth. This type of crown has traditionally been thought to have the most aesthetic appeal, but not offer the strength of the others, but many advances have been in the works, there are new materials such as Zirconia and other ceramic materials that offer more strength with the aesthetics. |

Porcelain Fused to Metal: This type of crown is a metal-based crown with a porcelain coating that has been baked to the outside giving it a more natural look. This type of crown is very strong and blends well with your teeth but is known to have chipping problems exposing the metal beneath. |

Gold Crowns: This type of crown is often recommended for teeth in the back of your mouth where the crown cannot be seen. Gold crowns are most like your natural teeth in feel, bite and your tissue adapts best to this material. Gold crowns offer a lot of strength but do not hide as easily in your mouth. |

What the Dental Crown Procedure Involves
Receiving a dental crown usually requires two office visits. At the first appointment we will take molds of the tooth area which will be used to create your custom crown. We will also create a temporary crown until your new crown is fabricated by a dental laboratory. While the tooth is numb, a dentist on our team at our San Diego, CA office will remove any decay and then shape the surface allowing your new crown to properly fit. At the conclusion of that first office visit, we will place your temporary crown which will be cemented in place.
When we have received your new crown, we will call you to have the tooth cleaned once again, and your new crown will be carefully placed to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.
Before leaving, we will walk you through the care instructions and encourage regular dental visits to check your crown. As always, proper oral hygiene will help extend the life of your new crown.
