TMJ (Temporamandibular Joint)

 TMJ is from the large techincial term, Temporamandibular Joint. This refers to the jawbone joint, which allows you to open, close, and move side to side your mouth. If you are experiencing jaw pain or discomfort, our office, San Diego Dental Studio, has experience treating issues that affect the alignment of your jaw and temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
Dr. Bierman, Dr. Ma, or Dr. Summerhays will examine the jawbone joints for irregularities during your biannual comprehensive or periodic exam in order to detect signs of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD).
What this Joint (TMJ) Does
The purpose of your TMJ is to allow your mouth movement. When it is properly aligned, your teeth meet in their optimal bite position, allowing for regular functions such as chewing and speaking to occur properly and without discomfort. As you can assume, this is a very important joint, we use it hundreds of times a day, and if it caused us pain, that would be unacceptable. Normal joint function in our jaw is essential not only for chewing and speaking, but for overall comfort. A misaligned TMJ can cause headaches, extreme pain in the jaw, and ear or sinus infections. In our San Diego office, we can identify and treat these alignment issues.
How TMD, Joint Discomfort, Is Treated
After examination, Dr. Bierman, Dr. Ma, or Dr. Summerhays can discuss several treatment methods available to treat TMD. They made recommend:

A custom Mouthguard that tracks the movements of your jaw. While you sleep, the mouthguard works at realigning your jaw. Over time this mouthguard can permanently align your jaw helping your bite and reducing pain. |

Some patients may need a full mouth restoration. This would be recommended for patients whose TMD cannot be treated with traditional mouthguards. We can discuss with each patient personally what this restoration may entail as it would differ depending on the problem. |
