 If you have stained or discolored teeth, an at-home whitening kit might seem like the perfect answer. For some people, this could be true. For others, it could be a complete nightmare. It is always recommended before you use any type of at-home bleaching kit that you discuss your alternatives with Dr. Bierman or Dr. Ma first. Not only might there be a better solution, they might also tell you that you are not a good candidate for teeth whitening.
What should I know about teeth whitening? There are certain conditions as well as certain tooth colors that do not do well with bleaching. In general, yellow teeth are the most successful at becoming white again, whereas brown and gray do not have as much luck. In addition, if you have had any type of cosmetic dentistry done to enhance your smile, such as dental veneers, bleaching will not help. What could happen is that your natural teeth become whiter while the veneers are not affected, leaving you with an uneven, embarrassing smile.
Another danger of tooth whitening without the advice of your dentist is increased sensitivity for those people with receding gums, gum disease, or enamel erosion. Each of these conditions can cause you to be more sensitive to the bleaching process, making it uncomfortable not only during the process, but afterwards as well.
